This month’s CatchUp is with MomUp superstar, Jennifer Jones, now the Executive Director of Client Engagement at Sentier!
I started in the software development industry, and typically moved on to a new position every 4-5 years after all the big challenges were completed. However, one company kept throwing new challenges. I was offered the opportunity to move into C-level leadership positions and stayed at that company for 14 years. I was nervous leaving some of the technical details that I loved behind, but I was fortunate to be able to gain more business skills while still keeping my hands in technology. I like to be in a position where I learn something new every day.
“The greatest contribution of a leader is to make other leaders.” – Simon Sinek
I'm proud of the teams that I worked with and the people that I have mentored. I love seeing people advance with new skills, positions and, most of all, confidence. Working with a great team makes all the difference in the world.
Babysitting. Lots of babysitting. In high school, I was also a bank teller.
Moms are used to giving to others and having high demands put on them. They will live up to the challenge, but appreciation and flexibility go a long way. I worked 4 days a week when my children were younger which was a schedule that worked well for me and my employer. During busy times, I didn't mind working late at night at home or swapping my day off, because I knew that if I needed to leave work for a sick child, my employer understood.
Network! Companies will look much closer at a resume if it is personally given to them by someone they know.
My 3 children are college-aged and previously had jobs out of state during the summer. We were fortunate to get this extra time with our adult children as they were "forced" to come home. LOL!
Everyone's situation is very unique so just do what feels right for you and your family. Taking some time off from work doesn't mean your career is over. I took 3 months off with each child, worked 4 days/week for years and was still able to become a CEO.
I exercise every day so I like to watch TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and A Million Little Things that will keep me engaged rather than thinking about how many minutes are left. I also read non-fiction every night before bed which helps me to turn off my brain.
I got vaccinated! As a science junkie, I did my research and was very impressed with what I learned. Happy that we have the technology which can help end the pandemic.
I connected with Reem over a Facebook group posting over a year ago. She really listened to what I wanted and understood when I said, "No, that position is not right for me." We both stayed in touch. Eventually, she helped me to find a fabulous job with a start-up company. It's just what I was looking for. I am so excited to begin this new journey. Thank you Reem!
